How it works
An eSIM is a SIM card built into your phone. Instead of putting in a piece of plastic, your phone downloads the plan. Everything below happens on your own device.
1. Check your phone first
Your phone must support eSIM and must be carrier-unlocked. The app checks this before you pay.
- iPhone XS, XR and every model after them support eSIM.
- Most Android phones released in the last few years support eSIM, including recent Pixel, Samsung Galaxy S and Galaxy Z models. The app tells you if yours does not.
- A phone locked to a network by your home operator cannot install another operator's eSIM. If you are unsure, ask your operator to unlock it before you travel.
2. Buy in the app
3. Install the eSIM
After payment the app opens your phone's own eSIM setup screen. There is no QR code to photograph. Install over Wi-Fi or your home data connection before you fly — you need a working internet connection to download the eSIM, which is exactly what you will not have when you land.
4. Turn on data roaming for the travel line
This is the step people miss, and it is the single most common reason an eSIM appears not to work. The plan connects through a local partner network, so your phone treats it as roaming — even though there is nothing extra to pay.
- iPhone: Settings → Mobile Service (or Cellular) → pick your travel plan → turn on Data Roaming.
- Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → pick your travel plan → turn on Roaming.
Leave data roaming OFF for your normal home line, otherwise your home operator can still charge you.
5. Choose which line uses data
With two lines active, tell your phone to use the travel plan for mobile data and keep your usual number for calls and messages. Your own number keeps working; only data moves to the local network.
When does my plan start?
For most plans the validity period starts when the eSIM first connects to a network in your destination, not when you buy it. Each plan page states its own validity period.
An eSIM you have bought but never used stays valid for 180 days from purchase. After that it expires and cannot be used or refunded.
If you land and nothing works
- Check that data roaming is on for the travel line, not the home line.
- Check that the travel line is selected for mobile data.
- Turn flight mode on and off again to force the phone to search for a network.
- If a network still does not appear after a few minutes, select one manually in your network settings.
